Taxonomy
The science of classifying and naming organisms.
Binomial Nomenclature
A 2-part naming system using Genus and species.
Taxonomic Levels
The hierarchy: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and species.
Prokaryotic
Simple cells without a nucleus (Archaea and Bacteria).
Eukaryotic
Complex cells with a nucleus (Domain Eukarya).
Dichotomous Key
A tool used to identify organisms via yes/no questions.
Species
Organisms that interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Lytic Cycle
Viral cycle that bursts the host cell immediately.
Lysogenic Cycle
Viral cycle where DNA hides inside host DNA.
Pathogen
Any microbe (bacteria, virus, etc.) that causes disease.
Antibiotics
Drugs used to kill bacteria only.
Vaccines
Substances that prevent viral diseases by building immunity.
Robert Koch
Scientist who proved specific microbes cause specific diseases.
Domains and Kingdoms
The 3 domains are split into smaller groups called kingdoms.
What are the 6 Kingdoms?
Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
