Ottawa Ankle Rules (OAR)

A series of x rays is required only if there is pain in malleolar zone AND

-bone tenderness at posterior edge or tip of lateral malleolus (6cm)

-bone tenderness at posterior edge or tip of medial malleolus (6cm)

-inability to bear weight both immediately and in ER

A series of ankle x rays is required only if there is any pain in the mid-foot zone AND

-bone tenderness at base of 5th metatarsal

-bone tenderness at navicular

-inability to bear weight both immediately and in emergency department

What four structures are palpated in OAR

-5th metatarsal

-navicular

-medial malleolus

-lateral malleolus

Aside from bone tenderness/pain, what also must occur

the inability to bear weight
