Vocabulary flashcards covering the electron pairs, domain geometry, repulsion behavior, and bond angle of a water molecule.
Water molecule (H2O) electron pairs
The structure consisting of 2 bonding pairs and 2 lone pairs.
Tetrahedral electron-domain arrangement
The arrangement formed by the four total electron pairs (2 lone pairs and 2 bonding pairs) around the central oxygen atom in water.
Lone pair repulsion in water
The phenomenon where the two lone pairs repel each other and the bonding pairs with greater repulsion, pushing the bonding pairs closer together.
H−O−H bond angle
The angle between the bonds in a water molecule, reduced to 104.5∘ because lone pairs exert greater repulsion and push the bonding pairs closer together.
