Simple Squamous Epithelium
Allows materials to pass by diffusion and filtration; located in air sacs of lungs and lines the heart.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Function is secretion and absorption; found in kidney tubules and ovary surfaces.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Involved in absorption and secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other substances; lines the digestive tract.
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Secretes substances, particularly mucus; ciliated variety lines the trachea.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Protects underlying tissues that are subjected to abrasion; nonkeratinized type forms lines of the esophagus and mouth.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Provides protection; found in large ducts like sweat, mammary, and salivary glands.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Functions in protection and secretion; rare; found in the male urethra and large ducts of some glands.
Transitional Epithelium
Stretches and permits distension; lines ureters, urinary bladder, and part of the urethra.
Embyronic CT (Mesenchyme)
Gives rise to other connective tissue types; located in the embryo.
CTP, Loose CT (Areolar)
Wraps and cushions organs; located under epithelia.
CTP, Loose CT (Adipose)
Insulates against heat loss; supports and protects organs; found under skin, around kidneys, and eyeballs.
CTP, Loose CT (Reticular)
Supports other cells like white blood, mast, and macrophages; located in lymphoid organs.
CTP, Loose CT (Dense Regular)
Attaches muscle to bones or bones to bones; found in tendons and ligaments.
CTP, Loose CT (Elastic)
Allows recoil of tissue after stretching; found in walls of large arteries and ligaments in the vertebral column.
CTP, Loose CT (Dense Irregular)
Able to withstand tension in many directions; located in fibrous capsules of organs and joints, dermis.
Cartilage: Hyaline
Supports and reinforces; found in cartilage of nose, trachea, and larynx.
Cartilage: Elastic
Maintains shape while allowing flexibility; supports external ear (epiglottis).
Cartilage: Fibrocartilage
Provides tensile strength with the ability to absorb compressive shock; found in intervertebral discs and knee discs.
Bones
Function as levers for muscles; stores calcium and minerals; comprises bones.
Blood
Transports respiratory gases, wastes, and nutrients; located within blood vessels.
