ATP
A source of energy for biological processes. Metabolic reactions in cells must have a constant, steady supply of ATP
What is ATP made of
Ribose
Adenine
3 phosphate groups
ATP
ATP hydrolysis is catalysed by the enzyme ATP hydrolase
This reaction breaks ATP into ADP + Pi (inorganic phosphate)
The energy released can be coupled to energy requiring reactions in cells
The inorganic phosphate (PI) can be used to phosphorylate other compounds, often making them more reactive
ATP is resynthesises by a condensation reaction between ADP and PI
This resynthesis is catalysed by ATP synthase during:
Photosynthesis
Respiration
Word equation
ATP + Water —— ADP + PI
