Femur
The thigh bone; the only bone in the thigh and the heaviest and strongest bone in the body.
Patellar Surface
The anterior surface on the distal femur where the patella (kneecap) articulates.
Greater and Lesser Trochanter
Sites on the femur for muscle attachment.
Femoral Slant
The medial slant of the femur that aligns the knees with the body's center of gravity.
Tibia
The shin bone; the larger and stronger of the two leg bones.
Fibula
The thinner leg bone located next to the tibia.
Interosseous Membrane
The connective tissue that connects the tibia and fibula.
Medial Condyle
The part of the tibia that articulates with the distal end of the femur to form the knee joint.
Lateral Condyle
The outer part of the tibia that articulates with the femur.
Patellar Ligament
A ligament that attaches to the tibial tuberosity.
Medial Malleolus
The bulge on the inner ankle, formed by the tibia.
Lateral Malleolus
The outer bulge of the ankle, formed by the fibula.
Tarsals
The seven bones that make up the posterior half of the foot.
Calcaneus
The heel bone, which carries body weight.
Talus
The bone in the foot that articulates with the leg bones.
Metatarsals
The five bones of the foot that connect to the tarsals and phalanges.
Phalanges
Fifteen bones in the toes, with three per toe except for the big toe, which has two.
Ball and Socket Joint
A multiaxial joint that allows for rotational movement.
Hinge Joint
A uniaxial joint that allows for flexion and extension.
Smooth Muscle
Involuntary muscle found in the walls of hollow organs, characterized by no striations.
Striated Muscle
Another term for skeletal muscle, which is voluntary and striated.
Cardiac Muscle
Striated but involuntary muscle found only in the heart.
Tendons
Tissues that attach muscle to bones.
Flexion
Decreases the angle between two bones, bringing them closer together.
Extension
Increases the angle between two bones, the opposite of flexion.
Abduction
Movement of a limb away from the midline of the body.
Adduction
Movement of a limb toward the midline of the body.
Dorsiflexion
Upward movement of the foot.
Plantarflexion
Downward movement of the foot.
Opposition
Thumb movement that brings the thumb to touch the fingertips.
Prime Mover
The muscle primarily responsible for producing a specific movement.
Antagonist
The muscle that opposes the action of the prime mover.
Synergist
Muscles that assist the prime mover in performing an action.
Fixator
Muscles that stabilize joints for efficient movement.
Anabolic Steroids
Synthetic substances related to male sex hormones that can promote muscle growth.
Frontalis
A facial muscle that raises the eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead.
Orbicularis Oculi
Muscle around the eyes responsible for closing the eyelids.
Buccinator
Facial muscle that flattens the cheeks and holds food while chewing.
Masseter
A chewing muscle that elevates the mandible.
Sternocleidomastoid
A two-headed muscle responsible for neck flexion.
