Diplomonads
Anaerobic organisms with two nuclei and multiple flagella, often parasitic such as Giardia intestinalis. Clade: Excavata.
Parabasalids
Excavata group represented by Trichomonas vaginalis, a sexually transmitted parasite. Clade: Excavata.
Kinetoplastids
Excavata group that includes Trypanosoma, which causes sleeping sickness. Clade: Excavata.
Euglenids
Free-living in wet habitats or parasitic organisms with one or two flagella that can switch to heterotrophy without sunlight, example: Euglena. Clade: Excavata.
Stramenopiles
Organisms important in photosynthesis characterized by hairy and smooth flagella. Clade: SAR.
Diatoms
Unicellular algae in Stramenopiles with glass-like cell walls made of silicon dioxide, major phytoplankton component. Clade: SAR.
Golden Algae
Photosynthetic or mixotrophic, mostly unicellular organisms found in Stramenopiles. Clade: SAR.
Brown Algae
Multicellular marine organisms commonly known as seaweeds, belonging to Stramenopiles. Clade: SAR.
Dinoflagellates
Alveolates with cellulose armor that can cause red tides and some are bioluminescent. Clade: SAR.
Apicomplexans
Mostly parasitic alveolates, an example being Plasmodium which causes malaria. Clade: SAR.
Ciliates
Alveolates that use cilia for movement and feeding and utilize conjugation for genetic exchange. Clade: SAR.
Rhizarians
A group that includes many amoebas with thread-like pseudopodia. Clade: SAR.
Radiolarians
Rhizarians characterized by internal silica skeletons and reinforced, radiating pseudopodia. Clade: SAR.
Foraminiferans (Forams)
Rhizarians with pseudopodia extending through pores, contributing to the fossil record. Clade: SAR.
Cercozoans
Rhizarians that are mostly heterotrophic, some being photosynthetic, found in various environments. Clade: SAR.
Red Algae
Multicellular seaweeds with accessory pigments that mask chlorophyll, part of Archaeplastida. Clade: Archaeplastida.
Chlorophytes
Green algae that evolved greater size and complexity, mostly found in freshwater. Clade: Archaeplastida.
Charophytes
Green algae that are the closest relatives of plants, sharing traits such as cellulose production and flagellated sperm. Clade: Archaeplastida.
Plants
Organisms belonging to Archaeplastida that are not classified as protists. Clade: Archaeplastida.
Amoebozoans
Unikonta group characterized by amoebas with lobe-shaped pseudopodia. Clade: Unikonta.
Slime Molds
Amoebozoans that resemble fungi and exhibit an alternation of generations. Clade: Unikonta.
Tubulinids
Unicellular heterotrophic predators found in soil or water, belonging to Amoebozoans. Clade: Unikonta.
