Dermis
The thicker layer of skin located below the epidermis, composed of moderately dense connective tissue.
Papillary region
The upper layer of the dermis containing dermal papillae that project into the epidermis.
Reticular layer
The deeper layer of the dermis characterized by thicker, interwoven collagen fibers that provide tensile strength.
Fibroblasts
Specialized cells in the dermis responsible for producing collagen and fibrous tissue.
Collagen
A structural protein that provides tensile strength to the dermis.
Elastic fibers
Fibers that provide elasticity and flexibility to the dermis.
Ground substance
The glycoprotein substance filling the spaces between fibers in the dermis, contributing to its structure.
Skin turgor
The pressure of fluids inside the skin that gives it body and a three-dimensional structure.
Dendritic cells
Octopus-shaped cells in the dermis that detect antigens and communicate with the immune system.
Macrophages
Larger immune cells in the dermis that are phagocytic and provide the first line of defense against pathogens.
Mast cells
Cells in the dermis containing granules with histamine and other inflammatory mediators.
Adipocytes
Fat cells that store fat in vacuoles, primarily found in the hypodermis.
Hypodermis
The layer of tissue beneath the dermis, primarily composed of adipose tissue.
Adipose tissue
Loose connective tissue that stores fat and provides insulation and cushioning for the body.
