rule out the possibility of a spinal cord injury
Anterior longitudinal ligament

Posterior longitudinal ligament
full length of posterior aspect of vertbral body
interspinous ligament
between the spinous processes; limits rotation and flexion
supraspinous ligament
attached to each spinous process
lumbar plexus

when the annulus gives out and the nucleus can move out of place
