Mixed Dentition Period
The developmental stage of dentition whose onset is marked by the eruption of the permanent first molars.
Premolars
The class of teeth present in the permanent dentition that is entirely absent in the primary dentition.
Posterior Teeth in a Primary Quadrant
The 2 teeth located posteriorly in each quadrant of the primary dentition (the first and second primary molars).
Permanent Maxillary Right Quadrant
The quadrant of the permanent upper right arch that contains exactly 8 teeth.
Occlusal Surface
The chewing or biting surface located on posterior teeth, specifically premolars and molars.
Proximal Surfaces
The surfaces of adjacent teeth that face toward each other between the teeth.
Labial Surface
The surface of anterior teeth facing the lips; a term that should not be used to describe the cheek-facing (buccal) surface of a molar.
Premature Loss of Primary Teeth
The early loss of deciduous teeth, which can lead to space loss and cause malocclusion.
Neutroclusion
Another clinical term used interchangeably with Angle Class I occlusion.
Tooth #2.1
The FDI tooth notation representing the permanent maxillary left central incisor.
Tooth #1.8
The FDI tooth notation representing the permanent maxillary right third molar.
Tooth #2.6
The permanent maxillary left first molar; a non-succedaneous tooth because it erupts distal to the primary teeth rather than replacing a predecessor.
Angle Class III
The malocclusion classification characterized by a prominent chin in profile where the mandible is mesially displaced relative to the maxillary molars.
Distal Cusp of Mandibular First Molar
The fifth, small cusp located on the occlusal surface of the permanent mandibular first molar.
Cusp of Carabelli
An anatomical supplemental fifth cusp found, when present, on the maxillary first molar.
Lingual Root (Maxillary Molar)
The largest and longest of the three roots present on a permanent maxillary molar.
Mandibular First Premolar
A posterior tooth sometimes mistaken for a mandibular canine because its lingual cusp is underdeveloped and resembles a cingulum.
Mamelons
Small, rounded bump-like elevations found along the incisal edges of newly erupted incisors.
Lingual Fossa
The broad, shallow depression situated on the lingual aspect of the maxillary central incisor.
Cap Stage
The stage of odontogenesis during which early differentiation and formation of the enamel organ and dental papilla occur.
Odontoblast
The specialized cell type derived from the dental papilla that synthesizes and secretes dentin.
Dental Sac
The mesenchymal structure of the tooth germ that differentiates to produce the cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone.

Structure A (Tooth Germ)
The enamel organ, which is responsible for the production of tooth enamel.
Structure B (Tooth Germ)
The dental papilla, which is responsible for the production of dentin and the dental pulp.
Structure C (Tooth Germ)
The dental sac (follicle), which is responsible for the production of cementum.
Cleft Palate
A congenital craniofacial condition that results from the disruption or failure of fusion during the final stage of palate formation.
Eruption of First Permanent Molars
The physiological event responsible for localized tissue swelling and inflammation posterior to the primary second mandibular molars in a 6-year-old child.
Clinical Crown in Gingival Recession
The visible portion of the tooth crown that increases in size as the gingiva recedes, while the anatomical crown remains unchanged.
Cartilage
A firm and flexible connective tissue classified histologically as a form of supportive connective tissue.
Permanent Dentition Dental Arch
An arch in the adult dentition consisting of 16 teeth, contributing to the full set of 32 teeth divided across four 8-tooth quadrants.
