1/22
Comprehensive vocabulary flashcards covering the key reproductive systems, organs, processes, and child development concepts outlined in the Year 9 Child Studies Yearly Examination Revision Document.

Female Reproductive System
The organ system responsible for producing ova, facilitating fertilisation, and gestating a fetus; includes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina.

Male Reproductive System
The organ system responsible for producing and delivering sperm; includes the testes, scrotum, epididymis, vas deferens, prostate, seminal vesicles, urethra, and penis.
Ovary
The female reproductive organ that produces and releases egg cells (ova) and hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.
Fallopian Tube
Also referred to as the uterine tube; the pathway along which an egg travels from the ovary to the uterus and the typical site of fertilisation.
Fimbriae
Finger-like projections located at the ovarian end of each fallopian tube that sweep the released ovum into the tube.
Fundus
The dome-shaped top portion of the uterus located above the openings of the fallopian tubes.
Uterus
The hollow, thick-walled muscular organ where a fertilized egg implants and develops throughout pregnancy.
Endometrium
The inner mucosal lining of the uterus that thickens in preparation for embryo implantation and sheds during menstruation if fertilisation does not take place.
Myometrium
The thick middle muscular layer of the uterine wall that contracts during labour to deliver the baby.
Cervix
The narrow lower neck of the uterus that connects the uterine cavity to the vagina and dilates during childbirth.
Vagina
The muscular canal extending from the cervix to the outside of the female body, functioning as the birth canal.
Testes
The male primary reproductive organs that produce sperm cells and testosterone.
Scrotum
The external pouch of skin containing the testes that helps regulate their temperature for optimal sperm production.
Epididymis
A tightly coiled duct attached to the back of each testis where sperm mature and are stored.
Vas Deferens
The muscular tube that transports mature sperm from the epididymis to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation.
Prostate
A gland located below the bladder in males that secretes an alkaline fluid to nourish and protect sperm.
Seminal Vesicle
Glands located behind the bladder that produce a sugar-rich fluid that provides energy for sperm and forms a large part of semen.
Urethra
The channel that transports urine from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body, and in males additionally carries semen through the penis.
Gametes
Specialized reproductive sex cells—sperm in males and ova in females—that contain genetic material and unite during fertilisation.
Menstrual Cycle
The recurring hormonal cycle in females involving the maturation and release of an egg, alongside changes to the endometrium.
Fertilisation
The biological process in which a single male sperm cell penetrates and combines with a female ovum to form a zygote.
Assisted Reproductive Technologies
Medical procedures and reproductive treatments used to address fertility issues and help individuals or couples achieve pregnancy.
Play-Based Learning
An educational context where children organize and make sense of their social worlds as they engage actively with people, objects, and representations through play.
