1/12
Vocabulary flashcards covering the functions of yellow and red bone marrow, the roles of calcium across body systems, hematopoiesis, and descriptions of common bone fractures.
Hematopoiesis
The process of formation, development, and maturation of blood cells.
Yellow bone marrow
Bone marrow that functions to store fat to release energy.
Red bone marrow
Bone marrow that functions to produce blood cells.
Calcium (Skeletal System)
Provides bone strength and structure for the skeletal system.
Calcium (Muscular System)
Essential for muscle contraction in the muscular system.
Calcium (Nervous System)
Transmits nerve impulses in the nervous system.
Transverse fracture
A type of fracture where the break goes straight across the bone.
Oblique fracture
A fracture where the break is at a slanted angle; one part twists while one does not.
Spiral fracture
A fracture twisted along the shaft where both parts twist.
Comminuted fracture
A fracture where the bone is broken into 3 or more pieces, typically from a large impact.
Greenstick fracture
A fracture where the bone bends and cracks a little, commonly occurring in kids.
Avulsion fracture
A fracture where a tendon or ligament pulls off a small piece of bone.
Stress fracture
A small crack in the bone caused by repeated use.
