Integer
A number with no fractional or decimal part that belongs to the set containing positive whole numbers, negative whole numbers, and zero (e.g., …,−3,−2,−1,0,1,2,3,…).
Absolute value
The distance between a number and 0 on a number line, denoted as ∣x∣, which is always non-negative.
Additive inverse
The opposite of a given number that, when added to the original number, yields a sum of 0 (e.g., the additive inverse of 5 is −5).
Adding integers with the same sign
Add their absolute values together and attach the common sign to the result (e.g., −4+(−3)=−7).
Adding integers with different signs
Subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value and attach the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value (e.g., −7+3=−4).
Subtracting integers
Add the additive inverse of the integer being subtracted, written as a−b=a+(−b), and apply addition rules.
Multiplying or dividing integers with the same sign
The product or quotient is always positive (e.g., −6×(−2)=12).
Multiplying or dividing integers with different signs
The product or quotient is always negative (e.g., −6×2=−12).
