Connective Tissue
The most abundant and widely distributed primary tissue in the body, responsible for binding, support, protection, insulation, storage, and transportation.
Mesenchyme
The embryonic connective tissue that gives rise to all connective tissue types; consists of pluripotent cells.
Fibroblasts
The most common connective tissue cell type that synthesizes collagen fibers and ground substance.
Macrophages
Large immune cells derived from monocytes that perform phagocytosis and secrete substances involved in inflammation.
Adipocytes
Specialized connective tissue cells that store fat and are involved in energy storage and thermal insulation.
Reticular Tissue
A type of specialized connective tissue composed of a network of reticular fibers that support the framework of organs like lymph nodes and bone marrow.
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
A connective tissue type characterized by randomly arranged collagen fibers; provides strength in multiple directions.
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
A connective tissue type characterized by parallel bundles of collagen fibers; provides high tensile strength in one direction.
Extracellular Matrix
The non-cellular component present within all tissues and organs; it provides structural and biochemical support to surrounding cells.
Mast Cells
Connective tissue cells that release histamine and other mediators of inflammation; involved in allergic reactions.
Plasma Cells
B lymphocyte-derived cells that produce antibodies; usually found in sites of chronic inflammation.
Mucoid Connective Tissue
A type of embryonic connective tissue found primarily in the umbilical cord; rich in hyaluronic acid and provides support.
Loose (Areolar) Connective Tissue
The most abundant type of connective tissue with a high concentration of cells and a flexible matrix.
Hyaline Cartilage
A smooth, glossy type of cartilage that provides support and flexibility, commonly found in joints.
Bone
A dense connective tissue that makes up the skeleton; provides structural support and protection for organs.
