Location: Attached to bones or tendons

Function: Motion, posture, heat production, protection

Smooth (Visceral) Muscle Tissue

Location: Iris of eye, airways to lung, stomach, intestines

Function: Motion

Cardiac Muscle Tissue

Location: Heart wall

Function: Pumps blood to all parts of the body

Nervous Tissue

Location: Nervous System

Function: Conducts nerve impulses to all other neurons, muscle fibers, or glands

Simple Squamous Epithelial Tissue

Location: Air sacs of small intestines, lining of capillaries

Function: Diffusion

Simple Cuboidal Epithelial Tissue

Location: Lining of kidney, many other glands

Function: Secretion and absorption

Simple Columnar Epithelial Tissue (non-cilliated)

Location: Lines digestive canal, and ducts of many glands

Function: Secretion and absorption

Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelial Tissue

Location: Lines some bronchials of respiratory tract, uterine tubes, uterus, central canal of spinal cord

Function: Moves mucus and foreign particles toward throat

Stratified Squamous Epithelial Tissue

Location: Parts of pharynx and vagina, and covers tongue

Function: Prevents against abrasion, water loss, ultra violate radiation, and foreign invasion

Glandular Tissue

Location: Pituitary gland, thyroid gland

Function: Hormones regulate many metabolic and physiologic activities to maintain homeostasis.

Adipose Tissue

Location: Subcutaneous tissue deep to skin around heart and kidneys, yellow bone marrow

Function: Reduces heat loss through skin; serves as an energy reserve, supports and protects organs

Hyaline Cartilage

Location: Ends of long bones, anterior ends of ribs, nose, parts of trachea, fetal skeleton etc.

Function: Provides smooth surfaces for movement at joints, flexibility, and support; weakest type of cartilage.

Elastic Cartilage

Location: Lid on top of larynx (epiglottis), part of external ear, auditory tubes

Function: Provides strength and elasticity, maintains shape of certain structures.

Fibrocartilage

Location: Pubic symphsis (where hip bones join anteriorly), invertibral discs, meniscus of knee, portions of tendons

Function: Support and joining structures together

Compact Bone

Location: Various parts of bones ( “outer layer” of bones, on almost all bones like skull, sternum etc.)

Function: Support, protection, storage; houses blood forming tissue

Spongy Bone

Location: Various parts of bones (ends of long bones like femur, humorous etc. )

Function: support, protection, storage; houses blood-forming tissue

Blood

Location: Within blood vessels (arteries, capillaries, veins, etc.) and chambers of the heart

Function: Red blood cells transport oxygen and some carbon dioxide; white blood cells, carry platelets for blood clotting etc.

Ligament

Location: forms tendons (attach muscle to bone) and aponeuroses (muscle to muscle)

Function: Provides strong attachment between various structures.
