Matter
Any substance that has mass and takes up space.
Non-matter
Anything that does not have mass and does not take up space: light, heat, and sound.
Atom
The smallest unit of matter - what everything is made of!
Element
A basic substance made of atoms, where each type has special parts that make it unique.
Molecule
A particle made by two or more of the same atoms held together by a chemical bond, such as H2 or O3.
Compound
A substance formed by two or more different atoms held together by a chemical bond, such as water (H2O) or sodium chloride (NaCl).
Chemical Bond
The force between two or more atoms that holds them together.
Covalent Bond
A type of chemical bond where atoms share electrons.
Double Bond
A bond formed when an oxygen atom shares two electrons with another oxygen atom.
Law of Conservation of Matter
the rule that says matter can neither be created nor destroyed, the amount of matter before and after a chemical reaction must be equal
How many parts do atoms have?
three!
