Vocabulary flashcards covering key statistical concepts, models (Binomial, Poisson, Gaussian), measures of central tendency, and their applications in radiological control and counting statistics.
Statistic
An estimate of a variable, as an average or a mean, made on the basis of a sample taken from a larger set of data.
Binary Process
An event or observation that has two possible outcomes, specifically defined as a trial with a success and a failure.
Probability of Radioactive Decay Success
The probability that a given radioactive nucleus decays during observation time t, given by 1โeโฮปt.
Binomial Distribution
The most general statistical model, widely applicable to all processes with a constant probability; it is not widely used in nuclear applications because the mathematics are too complex.
Poisson Distribution
A simplified version of the binomial distribution that is valid when the probability of success, P(x), is small, showing the predicted number of successes clustered at the lower end of the curve.
Poisson Model Applications
Nuclear applications where the population (number of counts) is small, mainly involving counting system background and detection limits.
Gaussian Distribution (Normal Distribution)
A further simplification of the binomial distribution applicable if the average number of successes is relatively large but the probability of success is still low, producing a bell-shaped curve centered at the mean.
Gaussian Distribution Applications
Counting applications where the mean success is expected to be greater than 20, such as counting system calibrations, operational checks, and normal samples containing activity.
Counting Statistics
The application of specific statistical methods and models to nuclear counting operations to predict inherent statistical uncertainty (estimating precision) and to serve as a check on the normal function of equipment.
Mode
An individual data point that is repeated the most in a particular data set.
Median
The center value in a data set when the values are arranged in ascending order.
Mean (xห)
The average value of all values in a data set, determined by dividing the sum of all data points by the total number of points (xห=nโxiโโ).
Variance and Standard Deviation
Statistical values used as descriptors of the spread of the population (or data set) in a normal distribution.
Gaussian Standard Deviation Ranges
The percentages of data falling within standard deviation intervals of the mean in a Gaussian distribution: ยฑ1ฯ=68%, ยฑ2ฯ=95%, and ยฑ3ฯ=99%.
