element
A pure substance consisting entirely of one type of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means.
compound
A pure substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio.
Solution
A specific type of homogeneous mixture where one substance (the solute) is completely dissolved and evenly distributed within another substance (the solvent).
alloy
A mixture composed of two or more elements, where at least one of the elements is a metal (for example, steel or brass), designed to improve properties like strength or corrosion resistance.
atom
The basic unit of a chemical element and the smallest particle of matter that retains the defining properties of that element.
mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are physically combined rather than chemically bonded, meaning each substance retains its individual chemical identity.
physical change
A change in the form, state, or appearance of a substance that does not alter its underlying chemical composition (such as melting ice or chopping wood).
chemical change
A process in which one or more substances undergo a chemical reaction to transform into entirely new substances with different chemical properties (such as rusting iron or burning wood).
