Cell (Excel)
The basic unit of an Excel worksheet where data such as text, numbers, or formulas is entered.
Column (Excel)
Vertical divisions within a worksheet that are identified by letters.
Row (Excel)
Horizontal divisions within a worksheet that are identified by numbers.
Name Box
An interface element in Microsoft Excel that displays the reference or address of the currently active cell.
Formula Bar
A toolbar located above the worksheet grid that displays the contents of the selected cell, including text, numerical values, and formulas.
Ribbon (Excel)
The primary toolbar situated at the top of the Excel window that contains command tabs including Home, Insert, Page Layout, and Formulas.
Sheet Selector
A navigation control that allows users to switch between different worksheets contained within the same workbook.
Sheet Tab
A tab located near the bottom of the Excel workspace that displays the name of an individual worksheet in the workbook.
Cell Address
The unique reference assigned to a cell based on its coordinates at the intersection of a column letter and row number (for example, A1).
Active Cell
The specific cell currently selected within a worksheet, visually highlighted with an outline border.
Cell Range
A designated selection of multiple contiguous or non-contiguous cells in a spreadsheet, written with a colon between endpoints (such as A1:A10).
Formula (Excel)
An expression that performs calculations on worksheet values to execute mathematical, statistical, logical, or text operations.
Equal Sign (=)
The starting symbol required at the beginning of every Excel entry to signal to the software that a formula is being entered rather than plain text or a number.
Cell Reference
The practice of using cell coordinates (such as A1 or B1) in a formula rather than typing raw numbers, making calculations dynamic and easy to update.
Functions (Excel)
Built-in, pre-defined formulas that simplify calculations by providing efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility without writing complex arithmetic manually.
SUM Function
A built-in Excel function that adds together all numbers contained within a designated range of cells.
AVERAGE Function
A built-in Excel function that calculates the arithmetic mean of all numeric values within a specified range of cells.
CONCAT Function
A built-in text function in Excel used to combine or join text strings from multiple individual cells into one cell.
MAX Function
A built-in Excel function that evaluates a specified cell range and returns the largest numeric value present.
LEFT Function
A text function that extracts a specified number of characters starting from the beginning (leftmost side) of a text string.
RIGHT Function
A text function that extracts a specified number of characters starting from the end (rightmost side) of a text string.
Data Visualization
The process of converting complex raw numbers and data into visual charts and graphs to quickly identify patterns, trends, and outliers.
Bar Chart
A graphical format ideal for comparing quantities or metric values across different discrete categories.
Pie Chart
A circular chart divided into segments, useful for showing the proportional parts of a whole.
Line Chart
A chart type best suited for illustrating continuous changes, trends, and movements over intervals of time.
Scatter Plot
A chart type effective for plotting and visualizing the mathematical relationship or correlation between two numerical variables.
Histogram
A specialized chart format utilized for displaying the statistical distribution and frequencies of a dataset across continuous ranges.
Stacked Column Chart
A column chart variety where segments representing different categories or series are stacked vertically within each column to display cumulative totals.
Combo Chart
A custom Excel chart format that integrates two or more distinct chart types (such as stacked columns combined with a line) to present multiple data series clearly.
Data Labels
Direct textual or numerical markers placed alongside or within chart elements (such as bars, columns, or line markers) to display exact values for enhanced readability.
