What did Wundt do that can be considered the beginning of modern psychology?

He opened the first psychological laboratory in Leipzig, Germany

2

What was Wundt’s nickname & why?

The father of psychology → he moved the study of psychology away from its philosophical roots towards controlled research

3
New cards

What type of experience did Wundt concentrate on?

Conscious experience

4
New cards

What type of approach did Wundt take to study conscious thought meaning that he broke down conscious thoughts into separate elements?

Reductionist

5
New cards

What did Wundt develop to test human experience and what was this based on?

Structuralism → based on introspection

6
New cards

What is structuralism?

The analysis of the basic elements that constitute the mind

7
New cards

What is introspection defined as?

The systematic analysis of one’s own conscious experience of a stimulus (a process of looking inwards at one’s own thoughts)

8
New cards

What did people have to do during Wundt’s experiments using introspection?

Focus on an everyday object (i.e. ticking metronome) & reflect on sensations, feelings & images

9
New cards

How did people report on their conscious thoughts?

Systematically in terms of its component parts (e.g. sensations & emotional reaction)

10
New cards

What was a specific example of a stimulus that Wundt used to test introspection?

Metronome

Outline and evaluate Wundt and the emergence of psychology as a science (16 marks)

Write your AO1 paragraph

  • Wundt opened the first psychology laboratory at the University of Leipzig, Germany in 1879, marking the start of modern psychology. He is often regarded the “father of psychology” for moving the study of psychology away from its philosophical roots towards controlled, scientific research.

  • Wundt defined psychology as the study of conscious experience & developed structuralism (the analysis of the basic elements that constitute the mind), the main tool of which was introspection.

  • Introspection is the systematic analysis of own’s one conscious experience of a stimulus (a process of looking inwards at one’s own thoughts). Participants were asked to focus on an everyday object (e.g. ticking metronome) & reflect on their sensations, feelings & images, which Wundt then systematically reported on in terms of their component parts.

Outline and evaluate Wundt and the emergence of psychology as a science (16 marks)

Write your strength AO3 PEEL (established psychology as a scientific discipline)

  • Point: One strength of Wundt’s work is that he established psychology as a scientific discipline separate from philosophy.

  • Evidence: For example, Wundt standardised introspection by exposing participants to controlled stimuli (e.g. ticking metronome) & asking them to report their conscious experiences systematically.

  • Explain: This introduced systematic manipulation of variables & measurement of mental processes, marking a shift towards empiricism & criteria for psychology (e.g. objectivity & replicability).

  • Link: Therefore, Wundt’s work is significant as it laid the methodological foundations for modern psychology as a science rather than a speculative discipline.

Outline and evaluate Wundt and the emergence of psychology as a science (16 marks)

Write your strength AO3 PEEL (cognitive approaches)

  • Point: One strength of Wundt’s work is that his focus on conscious mental processes provided a foundation for later cognitive approaches.

  • Evidence: For example, by attempting to break consciousness into basic elements (e.g. sensations & feelings), Wundt introduced the idea that internal mental processes can be scientifically studied rather than ignored.

  • Explain: This influenced later cognitive psychology & cognitive neuroscience by encouraging the scientific investigation of internal processes, which are now studied objectively using neuroimaging.

  • Link: Overall, Wundt’s work was important in shaping the development of modern cognitive science.

Outline and evaluate Wundt and the emergence of psychology as a science (16 marks)

Write your limitation AO3 PEEL (subjective)

  • Point: One limitation of Wundt’s work is that introspection is inherently subjective.

  • Evidence: For example, participants were required to report their conscious experiences in response to a ticking metronome, but these depended on individual perception & interpretation.

  • Explain: This reduces validity & inter-rater reliability, as the responses were subjective, unlike modern neuroimaging (e.g. fMRI & EEG), which produce objective, quantifiable & replicable data.

  • Link: As such, behaviourists would argue that introspection lacks the objectivity, replicability & falsifiability required for psychology to meet modern scientific standards.
