Posterior Cerebral Artery (PCA)
Supply much of the occipital lobe, and my occlusion may result in hemianopsia
Corticospinal Tract
Carries motor information toward spinal nerves, and most of my fibers cross at the medullospinal junction
Corticobulbar Tract
Synapses with the cell bodies of cranial nerves in the brainstem
Pia Mater
Gentle mother who closely hugs the brain, following its surface and extending into the sulci
Extrapyramidal Pathway
Pathways influence the LMN indirectly and area generally responsible for regulating muscle tone
Pyramidal Pathway
Directly connect the CNS motor system toward the LMN and am generally responsible for muscle strength
Anterior Cerebral Artery (ACA)
Supply the medial brain and the portion of the motor strip associated with the legs and feet
Amygdala
Almond-shaped limbic structure heavily involved in fear, aggression, and responses to environmental danger
Arachnoid Mater
Middle meningeal layer; bleeding in the space below me is associated with a particular type of hemorrhage
Upper Motor Neuron (UMN) Medulla/Brainstem
Every part of me remains within te PNS. Damage to me may result in spasticity/hypertonia. Contains nuclei involved in phonation, VP closure, swallowing, and articulation
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Cushions the brain, provides buoyancy, transports nutrients/hormones, and helps remove metabolic waste
Circle of Willis
Vascular defense system that can help provide alternate blood flow when the usual route is blocked
Dura Mater
Outermost meningeal layer, “hard mother”
Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA)
Supplies the speech and language areas and am the cerebral artery most likely to become blocked
Lower Motor Neuron (LMN)
Part exists within CNS, and I’m the final route through which motor stimulation actually reaches the target muscle
