Database
A structured collection of data that can be organised
Relational Database
A database that stores data in related tables and uses relationships between those tables to organise data.
Table
A structure within a database that stores related data organised into records and fields.
Record
A single row in a database table containing all the data about one item or instance.
Field
A single item of data within a record. A field forms a column in a database table.
Primary Key
A field that uniquely identifies each record in a table.
Foreign Key
A field in one table that links to the primary key of another table to create a relationship between the tables.
Data Redundancy
The unnecessary duplication of data within a database. Relational databases help to eliminate data redundancy.
Data Inconsistency
A situation where duplicate copies of data have different values. Relational databases help to eliminate data inconsistency.
Relationship
A link between tables created using primary keys and foreign keys
SQL (Structured Query Language)
A language used to retrieve, insert, edit and delete data in a relational database.
Query
A request to retrieve or manipulate data in a database using SQL commands.
Flat File Database
A database that contains ONLY one table.
