What do you do for work?
I’m a professional barber and I’ve been doing it for about seven years now. What I enjoy most is the creative side, particularly crafting different hairstyles and focusing on the fine details that really make a difference. I’m also really into photography and editing, since it ties in well with my interest in style and appearance.
How long have you been doing this job?
Well, I’ve been a barber for about seven years now. Over that time I’ve really honed my skills, and to be honest I’m way more confident than I used to be. The best part for me is that it never gets stale — there’s always something new to try and you can always push your technique further
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most is working with visiting clients who only need a quick haircut while they’re here. I also love looking at my work through an artist’s eye, because it’s the small details that set a professional barber apart. What’s even better is that many of them end up becoming friends and message me when they come back.
Is there anything challenging about your work?
To be honest, the toughest part is keeping the area around the salon clean. Some people throw rubbish in the street or even out of their cars, and it’s the same as going to a friend’s house and finding it messy — you just wouldn’t do that. So I end up cleaning it every day, but it gets dirty again the next morning.
Do you think you will continue doing this job in the future?
Honestly, I don’t see myself doing this forever. It’s really hard on your body — your back, your legs, your neck, everything starts to hurt after a while. So down the line I’d likely transition into a less physical role, perhaps mentoring new barbers or managing my own salon.
What makes a job satisfying, in your opinion?
In my opinion, a job becomes satisfying when you can see the direct impact of your work. For me as a barber, it’s that moment when a client looks in the mirror and genuinely smiles at the result. Beyond that, I also value the creative freedom and the relationships you build with regular customers
Do you prefer working individually or in a team?
Honestly, I’m fine with either. As long as I can do my work to a professional standard, I don’t really mind. I quite like working on my own because I can focus, but it’s also nice having a team around to bounce ideas off and share the busy days with
How do you manage your time at work?
To be honest, it really depends.
Some days are manic. Fully booked back to back.
Other days? Dead quiet. No appointments at all. Not only do I deal with scheduled clients, but I also get walk-ins.
If a walk-in were to pop in at 4:45, I’d just squeeze them in, even with a 5 o’clock booking. Because the truth is, I can’t bank on people turning up on time.
Were I to say no, I’d lose business.
So I just roll with it. Stay flexible. And try to keep everything running smoothly.
