Le Chatelier’s principle (simplified)
Any change to a system at equilibrium results in partial opposition to that change
What is the reverse reaction?
When the shift is towards the left (the reactants)
What is the forward reaction?
When the shift is towards the right (the products)
How does increasing concentration affect equilibrium?
If the concentration of products or reactants is increased, the equilibrium will shift towards the other side.

If you increase the concentration of NH3 in this reaction, in what direction would the equilibrium shift?
Left. The equilibrium shifts back towards the reactants
How does decreasing concentration affect equilibrium?
The system of the reaction will shift in the direction where the product/reactant was removed.

If NH3 was removed in this chemical equation, where would the equilibrium shift?
Right. Where products will be produced more
What form of the line will one substance take, if its concentration increases?
Sharp
What form of the line will the rest of the substances take when one substance’s concentration increases?
Smooth
How does increasing pressure affect equilibrium?
Equilibrium shifts to the side with the fewest gas molecules (represented by the coefficients in the balanced equation)
How does decreasing pressure affect equilibrium?
Equilibrium shifts to the side with the most gas molecules
What is the key rule when determining equilibrium from a change in pressure?
The equilibrium always either shifts towards the sides with either the fewest or most gas molecules (increase and decrease in pressure respectively)
What form of line visually indicates pressure has changed?
Sharp
When the pressure has changed, has it involved all substances or one?
All substances
How does increasing temperature affect equilibrium?
The equilibrium moves towards the products (the right)
What type of -thermic reaction correlates with an increase in temperature?
Endothermic. Heat is added
What type of -thermic reaction correlates with an decrease in temperature?
Exothermic. Heat is lost to the surroundings
How does decreasing temperature affect equilibrium?
The equilibrium moves towards the reactants (the left)
What is volume proportional with, and how does it affect equilibrium?
Volume is inversely proportional to pressure, i.e. decreased volume = increased pressure. It affects equilibrium similarly to pressure
What does RICE stand for when making its table?
Reaction
Initial concentration (M)
Change in concentration (x)
Equilibrium concentration
