What solution does sulfate ion test include
A solution containing the barium ion Ba2+, e.g barium chloride solution or barium nitrate solution.
They are soluble in water, aqueous solutions of these compounds contain the barium ion,
What happens if we add solution containing barium ions to sample containing sulfate ion
We form barium sulfate, this is an insoluble reaction.
In this reaction , the barium sulfate forms a white precipitate ( positive result)
Why does barium nitrate have bigger advantage over barium chloride
If we use barium chloride, we can test the same sample for halide ions.
What can presence of carbonate ions in reaction do
Give a false positive for sulfate ions, as carbonate ions reacting with barium ion gives a white precipitate aswell.
So before testing for sulfate ions, we test for carbonate ions first.
