Simple squamous epithelium
What it does: Reduces friction; controls vessel permeability; performs absorption and secretion
Found in: Epithelia lining ventral body cavities; lining heart and blood vessels; portions of kidney tubules (thin sections of nephron loops); inner lining of cornea; alveoli (air sacs) of lungs
Simple cuboidal epithelium
What it does: Limited protection, secretion, absorption
Found in: Glands; ducts; portions of kidney tubules; thyroid gland
Simple columnar epithelium
What it does: Protection, secretion, absorption
Found in: Lining of stomach, intestine, gallbladder, uterine tubes, and collecting ducts of kidneys
Stratified squamous epithelium
What it does: Provides physical protection against abrasion, pathogens, and chemical attack
Found in: Surface of skin; lining of mouth, throat, esophagus, r-ctum, an-s, and v-gina
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
What it does: Protection, secretion, move mucus with cilia
Found in: Lining of nasal cavity, trachea, and bronchi; portions of male reproductive tract
Transitional epithelium
What it does: Permits expansion and recoil after stretching
Found in: Urinary bladder; renal pelvis; ureters
Aereolar
FUNCTIONS: Cushions organs; provides support but permits independent movement; phagocytic cells provide defense against pathogens
WHERE: Beneath dermis of skin, digestive tract, respiratory and urinary tracts; between muscles; around blood vessels, nerves, and around joints
Adipose
FUNCTIONS: Provides padding and cushions shocks; insulates (reduces heat loss); stores energy
WHERE: Deep to the skin, especially at sides, buttocks, breasts; padding around eyes and kidneys
Reticular
FUNCTIONS: Provides supporting framework
WHERE: Liver, kidney, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow
Dense Regular
FUNCTIONS: Provides firm attachment; conducts pull of muscles; reduces friction between muscles; stabilizes relative positions of bones
WHERE: Between skeletal muscles and skeleton (tendons and aponeuroses); between bones or stabilizing positions of internal organs (ligaments); covering skeletal muscles deep fasciae
Dense Irregular
FUNCTIONS: Provides strength to resist forces applied from many directions; helps prevent overexpansion of organs such as the urinary bladder
WHERE: Capsules of visceral organs; periostea and perichondria; nerve and muscle sheaths; deep dermis of the skin
Blood
FUNCTIONS: Carry specific cell types (formed elements)
WHERE: Cardiovascular System
Lymph
FUNCTIONS: Carry specific cell types (formed elements)
WHERE: Lymphatic system
Bone
FUNCTIONS: For weight support
WHERE: Vertebrate skeletal structures
Elastic Cartilage
FUNCTIONS: Supportive but bends easily
WHERE: External ear and epiglottis
Hyaline Cartilage
FUNCTIONS: Reduces friction between bones
WHERE: Synovial joints, rib tips, sternum, and trachea
Fibrocartilage
FUNCTIONS: Limits movement, Prevents bone-to-bone contact, Pads knee joints
WHERE: Pubic bones and intervertebral discs
