Nervous System
The organ system responsible for transmitting nerve signals throughout the body.
Pulmonary Artery
The blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Vein
The blood vessel that returns oxygen-rich blood to the heart.
Myocardium
The layer of the heart that contains muscle responsible for contractions.
Respiratory System
The body system responsible for gas exchange, including structures such as the lungs, bronchi, and trachea.
Alveoli
The structures in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
Thalamus
The brain region that processes sensory information.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
The division of the nervous system that slows the heart rate.
Sinoatrial (SA) Node
The structure that acts as the heart's natural pacemaker.
Nervous Tissue
Specialized body tissue whose main role is transmitting electrical nerve signals and coordinating body communication.
Hypothalamus
The brain region that regulates pituitary hormone release.
Adrenal Gland
The endocrine gland that helps control blood pressure and the body's stress response.
Digestive Disorder
A disease or abnormal condition affecting the organs and structures of the digestive system.
Major Bone Types
The primary structural categories of bones in the human body, classified by shape into long, short, flat, irregular, and sesamoid bones.
Sesamoid Bones
Bones that are located embedded within tendons, such as the patella.
Ribosomes
Cellular organelles whose primary function is protein synthesis.
Cell Differentiation
The biological process by which generic cells undergo specialization to develop distinct structures and functions.
Mitochondria
The cellular organelle known as the powerhouse of the cell, responsible for producing ATP.
Mitosis and Meiosis
Processes of eukaryotic cell division that both require DNA replication prior to division and share stages of chromosome separation.
DNA Replication
The process of duplicating genetic material that must happen to DNA before cell division can take place.
