What does a curved line represent on a displacement-time graph?
Acceleration
2
New cards
Describe how the terminal velocity of an object can be determined using light gates.

Set up light gates vertically and measure distance between them

Connect them to a data logger and then release an object from rest above them, measuring the time it takes for the object to travel between the 2 light gates

Calculate velocity

3
New cards
Describe how light gates can also be used to investigate conservation of momentum.

Place 2 carts on a linear air track (reduce friction) with repelling magnets so they don't stick together

Attach card to the top of carts so they break the beam of light gates

Keep one cart stationary and push other towards it, measuring its velocity before collision

Then measure velocity of carts after collision,, calculate momentum before and after.

4
New cards
Describe the experiment in which one can determine 'g' using an electromagnet.

An electromagnet holds a steel ball suspended a measured distance above a surface, measure time taken until surface is hit

Using SUVAT calculate 'a' so 'g'

In projectile motion, what is the vertical acceleration?
Vertical acceleration is equal to 'g' downwards
