Open kit according to sterility, open lubricant, don sterile gloves
-Pick up suction catheter w/ dominant w/o touching any non-sterile surfaces.
-Pick up connecting tubing w/ non-dominant hand and secure catheter to tubing.
-Suction small amount of normal saline
Remove oxygen delivery device w/ nondominant hand. Hyperoxygenate and hyperinflate patient before suctioning.
Insert catheter w/o applying suction (into artificial airway) w/ thumb and forefinger of dominant hand.
Until resistance is met or patient begins to cough.
Pull back one cm.
-Apply intermittent suction while slowly withdrawing catheter. -Rotating it back and forth b/t dominant hand and forefinger
-Watch for respiratory distress. .
Remove Pt’s oxygen delivery device. Gently but quickly insert catheter into Pt’s nares during inhalation. Insert it at a slight downward slant or through mouth, without applying suction.
DO NOT FORCE catheter through naris. Pull back 1 cm if resistance if felt.
