Face-to-Face Interactions
The traditional type of interaction to which historical communication was usually confined before technology provided diverse alternatives.
Advent of Technology
The development that brought about far more complex and diverse ways of communicating, interacting, and influencing others beyond traditional face-to-face limits.
Dimensions of Communication
The four specific factors—ages, races, religions, and regions—across which it is important to effectively understand and communicate ideas, values, and cultures.
Multimodal Texts
Texts characterized by the combination of five distinct modes of communication: linguistic, visual, gestural, audio, and spatial.
Linguistic Mode
The most common mode of communication, referring strictly to any sort of written or spoken text, which can be used in a variety of ways.
Visual Mode
The mode of communication that refers strictly to images and characters, such as marks, signs, and symbols, using elements like color, layout, style, size, and perspective.
Gestural Mode
The mode of communication centered entirely on movement and how humans interpret it, including facial expressions, hand gestures, body language, and physical interactions.
Spatial Mode
The mode of communication that refers directly to the organization of elements in a space and the physical closeness or proximity between people and objects.
Audio Mode
The mode of communication focusing entirely on sound and its auditory dimensions, including music, sound effects, ambient noises, silence, tone, volume, emphasis, and accent.
Digital Multimodal Texts
A broad category of multimodal texts that includes online platforms such as websites and blogs.
Print-Based Multimodal Texts
A broad category of multimodal texts that includes static paper media such as graphic novels, newspapers, and magazines.
Live Performance Multimodal Texts
A dynamic, real-time form of multimodal text utilized in settings such as theater, concerts, face-to-face conversations, and live performances.
Ambient Noises
Background or environmental sounds classified as an element under the audio mode of communication.
Silence
The explicit absence of sound, which is classified as an active component of the audio mode of communication.
Tone
The specific quality or inflection of a person's voice listed as an element of audio communication used to convey emotional cues.
