Primary cause and trigger of the flood
A massive collapse of rock and glacier ice in the Langtang Himalayan region triggered an ice-rock avalanche into Lende Khola. It was a cascading disaster—not caused by ordinary rainfall.
Mechanism and the Destructive force of the flood
Avalanche debris temporarily dammed the river. The sudden buildup and release of trapped water unleashed a fast-moving flash flood packed with mud, rocks, ice and debris.

Scientists believe the earthquake like seismic waves was due to the huge mass strike that moves across the ground which caused a seismic signal equivalent to magnitude 5.2

Bhote Koshi basin began rising around 9:00 am, Aug 26; At Galchhi the Trishuli river rose 9m in 30 mins; At Malekhu the river rose 7m in a similar period.

Due to magnitude of river rising, hydrological monitoring stations along Trishuli were damaged or swept away and the exceptional rate of rise left downstream communities little time to evacuate

41 motorable bridges were washed away and 4 were damaged. Streches of roads were buried or eroded, completely cutting off land access to many communities.

Valley Dangers: Steep slopes accelerate water speed, narrow valleys concentrate debris into powerful flows, and short detection times leave little room for evacuation.
What is a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), and what holds back a glacial lake?
Definition: A sudden release of water from a lake associated with a glacier.
Natural Dams: Held back by moraine (loose rock/sediment), glacier ice, or landslide barriers.
What can trigger a GLOF event?
Avalanches, rockfalls, earthquakes, intense rainfall, glacier calving, or progressive weakening of the natural dam.
