Definition
Intelligence is a developmental process. Children get new schemas as they gain new experinces and perspective
Types of Schema Development
Assimilation
Accommodation
Equilibrium
Disequilibrium
Adaptation
Assimilation
Fits into existing schemas: no change
Accommodation
Change in schema to fir new information
Equilibrium
Homeostasis of schemas sufficiently explaining world
Disequilibrium
Schema is not sufficient to explain experience
Adaptation
all living things adapt to environment
Stages of Cognitive Development
Sensorimotor (0-2)
Pre-operational (2-7)
Concrete (7-11)
Formal (12+)
Stage 1: Sensorimotor and its stages
Reflexive Stage (0-2 months): learning through automatic responses
Primary Circular Reactions (2-4 months): Accidentally discover pleasurable actions in own body and repeats them
Secondary Circular Reactions (4-8 months): Accidentally discover pleasurable actions outside of own body
Coordination of Secondary Reactions (8-12 months): Intentionally combine actions to achieve a goal
Tertiary Circular Reactions (12-18 months): Experiment with different actions to see what happens
Invention of new means (18-24 months): Solve problems mentally before trial and error
Stage 2: Pre-operational
Age: 2-7
Pre-operational stage (2-4 years):Transductive reasoning thinking of something without object being present by use of language
Intuitive Phase (4-7 years): Speech becomes more social and child has intuitive grasp of logical concepts in some areas
Stage 3: Concrete Operations
Age: 7-11
Logical thought develops/able to perform all operations/consider physical factors/rational judgements
7-8: conservation of substance understanding develops (amt. of substance is the same even if shape changes)
9-10: conservation of area/mass understanding develops
Know the cup stuff
Stage 4: Formal Operations
Age: 12 +
Hypothetical/abstract thoughts/abstract thoughts/combine abstract with logical/algebra capabilities/as-if and if-then steps
