list the phases of cell cycle
Interphase (G1 phase, S phase, G2 phase ) and Mitosis (Prophase, Metaphase, anaphase and telophase + cytokinesis)
What do all somatic cells have in common?
they are genetically identical
What happens in the cell during interphase?
G1 phase: cells increase in size and volume
S phase: cell replicates entire genome
G2 phase: cell undergoes final growth and checks replicated DNA for errors
What happens in the cell during mitosis?
P: DNA coils, centrioles move to opposite poles and nuclear envelope breaks down.
M: chromosomes align along middle of cell
A: sister chromatids separate, spindle fibres drag chromosomes towards opposite ends of cells
T: Nuclear membrane form around separated chromosomes
C: cell membrane pinches inward and two genetically identical daughter cells are created
