Free Soil Party

Organized in 1848, political party to stop spread of slavery (stop to slavery)

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

Signed in 1848, ended the mexican american war. gave us land known as the mexican cession

American/Know-Nothing Party

Formed in 1849, a nativist political group. (anti immigrating and anti catholic)

California Gold Rush

Started in 1849, triggered many people to move to california in hope of finding gold. ( gold and wealth)

Uncle Tom's Cabin

Published in 1852 by Harriet Beecher Stowe, increased awareness of horrors of slavery. (awakening)

Kansas-Nebraska Act

Passed in 1854, repealing the Missouri Compromise of 1820, allowed popular sovereignty whether to allow slavery. (vote for yourself)

Republican Party

Organized in 1854, it’s goal was to stop the spread of slavery in western territories (abolition)

Dred Scott Decision

Made in 1857, sued for his freedom after living in free territories. (free or enslaved were not us citizens)

Pony Express

Established in 1860, improved communications across the country (fast speedy)

Final Emancipation Proclamation

Issued in 1863, declared all enslaved people in the confederate states were to be freed. (not of the union)
