Adding integers (same signs)
Add the numbers and keep the sign.
Adding integers (different signs)
Subtract the absolute values and keep the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.
Subtracting integers
Keep the first number, change subtraction to addition, and change the sign of the second number. Then add.
Multiplying and dividing (same signs)
Yields a positive answer.
Multiplying and dividing (different signs)
Yields a negative answer.
Zero rules (multiplication and division)
Any number multiplied by 0 equals 0. You cannot divide by 0.
Order of operations
Parentheses/grouping symbols → exponents → multiplication and division from left to right → addition and subtraction from left to right.
Exponent
Tells how many times to multiply the base by itself (for example, 32 means 3×3; parentheses matter because (−3)2 is different from −32).
Fraction bar
Means division (for example, −24/6 means −24÷6).
Substitution/evaluation
Replace each variable with its given number, put negative values in parentheses, then use order of operations.
Mean per hour
Add the amounts, then divide by the number of hours.
Change in temperature or money
Represent decreases/losses with negative numbers and increases/gains with positive numbers.
