Colony
A territory that is controlled and governed by another country, often for economic or strategic purposes.
Imperialism
Imperialism is the domination by one country of the political, economic, and/or cultural life of another country or region.
Exploitation
The unfair use of people, land, or resources for someone else's benefit, usually resulting in profit or power for the exploiting group.
Protectorate
A territory that has its own local government but is controlled or heavily influenced by a more powerful nation, especially in foreign affairs.
Cash Crop
A crop grown primarily to be sold for profit rather than to feed the local population (such as cotton, sugar, or coffee).
Extraction
The process of removing valuable natural resources, such as minerals, oil, or timber, from the land for economic gain.
Assimilation
The process of forcing or encouraging people to adopt the language, customs, and culture of another group while giving up their own.
Acculturation
– The exchange and adoption of cultural traits that occurs when different groups come into contact with one another.
Resistance
– Actions taken by individuals or groups to oppose foreign control, oppression, or unwanted political and social changes.
Nationalism
– A strong sense of pride, loyalty, and devotion to one's nation or people, often leading groups to seek independence or self goverment
Sovereignty
– The right and power of a nation or people to govern themselves without outside interference.
Economic Dependency
– A situation in which one country relies heavily on another country for goods, money, trade, or economic support.
Sphere of Influence
–An area in which a powerful nation has special economic or political privileges without directly governing the territory.
Indirect Rule
– A system of colonial government in which imperial powers control a territory through local leaders who remain in positions of authority.
Direct Rule
– A system of colonial government in which foreign officials directly control the political decisions and administration of a territory.
Paternalism
– The belief that one group is responsible for making decisions for another group because they are considered less capable of governing themselves.
Social Darwinism
– The belief that some societies or races are naturally superior to others and that powerful nations have the right to dominate weaker ones. This idea was often used to justify imperialism.
Racial Hierarchy
– The belief that certain races are superior or inferior to others, often used to justify unequal treatment and systems of oppression.
Resource Allocation
– The way resources such as land, labor, money, or materials are distributed and used within a society or economy.
Infrastructure
– The basic systems and structures needed for a society to function, including roads, railroads, ports, communication systems, and utilities.
Cultural Diffusion
– The spread of ideas, beliefs, customs, technologies, or products from one culture to another.
Social Stratification
– The division of society into different levels or classes based on wealth, power, status, or social position.
Unfavorable Trade
– A trading relationship in which one country benefits far more than another, often leaving the weaker country economically disadvantaged.
Natural Resources
– Materials found in nature that can be used for economic purposes, such as oil, gold, timber, rubber, or fertile land.
Monoculture
– The practice of growing only one crop over a large area, often for export, which can make economies dependent on a single product.
Export
– A good or resource that is produced in one country and sold to another country.
Import
– A good or resource that is brought into a country from another country for use or sale.
Monopoly
– Exclusive control over the production or sale of a good or service, preventing competition.
Tariff
– A tax placed on imported goods, often used to protect domestic industries or generate government revenue.
Surplus
– An amount of goods or resources that exceeds what is needed, allowing them to be stored, traded, or sold.
Urbanization
– The growth of cities as people move from rural areas in search of jobs and economic opportunities.
Westernization
– The adoption of cultural, political, economic, or social practices associated with Western societies.
