Buffer Solution
A solution that can maintain a stable pH when small amounts of acids or alkalis are added.
Weak Acid
An acid that partially dissociates in a solution, producing H plus ions.
Conjugate Base
The species that remains after an acid donates a proton (H plus).
Equilibrium
A state in a chemical reaction where the reactants and products are produced at the same rate, causing no net change.
Alkali
A substance that can accept protons or donate pairs of valence electrons; usually produces OH- ions in solution.
Dissociation
The process by which a compound breaks apart into its constituent parts, often into ions.
pH
A measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution on a scale of 0 to 14.
Soluble Salt
A salt that can dissolve in water to form a solution, often used in buffer solutions.
Sodium Acetate (NaA)
A soluble salt of acetic acid that can contribute to the buffer capacity when dissolved.
Acid-Base Neutralization
A reaction between an acid and a base that produces water and a salt.
