Vocabulary flashcards covering the mechanisms of heat energy transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation.
Heat Energy Transfer
The movement of heat energy from a place of high temperature to low temperatures via conduction, convection, or radiation.

Conduction
The main way that heat energy moves from particle to particle through solids.
Conductors
Solid substances that allow heat to flow through quickly and lose their heat quicker than insulators.
Insulators
Substances through which heat flows slowly.
Convection
The main way that heat energy moves through liquids and gases.
Convection Current
The cycle where fluids rise when they are hot and less dense, and sink when they are cold and more dense (e.g., a weather pressure system).
Radiation
The process involving 'giving out' heat, which is the only way heat can move through empty space containing no particles.
