Dickens exposes the 1834 Workhouse system as state-sponsored cruelty by showing how Scrooge's institutional mindset breeds social ruin through the symbolic children, Ignorance and Want.

Laissez- Faire Capitalism

Dickens attacks the Victorian government’s "leave alone" approach to the economy by using Scrooge’s total isolation to show that total self-interest results in a broken society, proving that the wealthy elite must take active, personal responsibility for the welfare of the poor.
