basilica
A church that is rectangular in shape, compared to more circular “central plan” churches
Central plan
A church plan that is focused on a central space with some degree of radial symmetry, usually circular, octagonal, etc. in shape
Nave
The central part of a church, usually between colonnades, running from the entrance to the sanctuary
Aisle
Space for walking in a church, usually on the outside of colonnades (if present)
Narthex
The entrance space between the exterior doors of the church and the doors opening into the actual church
Sanctuary
Space around the altar of a church, may include the choir and often backs up to an apse
Apse
A semi-circular recess, usually domed, that may make up part of the sanctuary of a church. Opposite the narthex in a basilica plan
Synthronon
A semi-circular bleacher-like tiered seating in the apse of some churches, where clergy sits with the bishop on a throne in the center
Gallery
A walking space on the second level of the church that leaves the nave open
Ambulatory
A covered walkway around the (typically curved) apse-end of most churches
