Organ System
Organismal
Chemical level
atoms, molecules, macromolecules
Cellular level
contains the molecules to build a cell structure (cells and organelles)
Tissue level
contains cells and extracellular material
Organ level
2+ types of tissues working together
Organ system level
Multiple organs working together toward a function.
Organismal level
living things
Axial region
axis of the body : head, neck, and trunk.
Appendicular region
the appendages or limbs (arms and legs)
Dorsal hollow nerve cord
Core vertebrate structure running along the back that develops into the spinal cord and brain.
Notochord
Core vertebrate structure that provides axial support and develops into the vertebral column.
Pharyngeal pouches
embryonic structures in vertebrates that become gills in fish and give rise to the throat and ear as humans
Parietal serosa
Outer layer of the serous membrane lining the walls of internal body cavities.
Visceral serosa
Inner layer of the serous membrane directly covers the external surface of visceral organs.
Serous fluid
Thin fluid is produced that reduces friction as organs move
Retroperitoneal organs
Organs located behind the peritoneum (kidneys)
