* An outbreak of violence between pro-slavery and anti-slavery people.
* Border ruffians (Missouri pro-slavery) would cross the border of Kansas to illegally vote for Kansas to become a slave-state and also used a lot of violence to get their way.

* "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free
