What is an element?
A pure substance whose atoms have the same number of protons.
What is a compound?
A pure substance formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in fixed ratios.
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances physically combined without chemical bonding between their particles.
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A mixture with uniform composition throughout; it has one phase.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture with non-uniform composition and more than one phase.
What is the difference between a compound and a mixture?
A compound contains elements chemically bonded in fixed ratios, whereas a mixture contains substances physically combined without chemical bonding.
Can the components of a mixture be separated physically?
Yes. The components of a mixture can be separated using physical methods.
Can the elements in a compound be separated by physical methods?
No. Chemical processes are required to break the chemical bonds in a compound.
What is kinetic molecular theory?
A model that describes matter as particles in constant motion.
