Americans with Disabilities Act
Enacted in 1990 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability.
Title I
Covers employment discrimination including recruitment, selection, training, and retention.
Title II
Ensures equal access for the disabled to public services, including public transportation.
Title III
Guarantees equal access for the disabled to public accommodations, excluding some private clubs and religious places.
Title IV
Covers equal access by disabled patrons to telecommunications services.
Title V
A miscellaneous section of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Reasonable accommodations
Modifications or adjustments to a job or work environment that enable a person with a disability to perform essential job functions.
Undue hardship
Significant difficulty or expense incurred by an employer in providing certain accommodations.
Direct threat
A significant risk to the health or safety of others that cannot be eliminated by reasonable accommodations.
Excluded from the statutory definition of DISABLED
Individuals such as illegal drug users, alcohol abusers, compulsive gamblers, and certain sexual offenders.
