Specific Heat Capacity
The amount of heat energy absorbed or lost to change the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1K or 1∘C, expressed by the formula c=mΔTQ.
Heat Sink
A device made from materials with low specific heat capacity (such as aluminum or copper) that heat up and cool down quickly because they cannot retain heat for long periods.
Sea Breeze
A localized wind created during the day when land heats faster than the ocean, causing warmer air over land to rise and cooler, denser air over the sea to flow inland.
Specific Heat of Dry Soil
The thermal property of dry soil, valued at 800Jkg−1K−1, which is approximately five times smaller than that of water.
Automobile Radiator System
A cooling mechanism that utilizes water's high specific heat capacity to absorb excess heat from an engine and dissipate it via a heat exchanger to prevent overheating.
Human Body Thermal Stability
The ability of the human body to maintain a temperature of approximately 37∘C, enabled largely because the body consists of about 60% water with high specific heat capacity.
Method of Mixtures
An experimental procedure using a calorimeter to measure the unknown specific heat capacity of a solid or liquid by mixing substances of different temperatures.
Principle of Calorimetry
An application of the law of conservation of energy stating that in an isolated system, the heat lost by hot bodies equals the heat gained by cold bodies.
Independent Variable (Specific Heat Experiment)
The temperature of the metal block being measured during the method of mixtures experiment.
Dependent Variable (Specific Heat Experiment)
The energy supplied to the metal block by heating during the specific heat capacity experiment.
Specific Heat of Water
The measure of heat capacity for liquid water, recorded as 4200Jkg−1K−1 in text descriptions and 4190Jkg−1K−1 in standard physical property tables.
Specific Heat of Aluminum
The heat capacity value for aluminum, listed as 900Jkg−1K−1 in standard problems and 910Jkg−1K−1 in reference tables.
