Viceroy
An official who rules in the king or queen's name, usually over a large territory or colony.
Antonio de Mendoza
The Viceroy who heard stories about riches to the north of Mexico and organized an expedition to discover whether or not they were true.
Francisco Vásquez de Coronado
The leader chosen to lead the expedition to the Seven Cities of Cíbola in search of gold.
Zuni settlement
A settlement reached in July 1540 by Coronado's expedition, inhabited by Puebloan people living in mud and stone houses who defended their village, wounding Coronado in the fight.
Coronado's expedition
An expedition including 240 mounted soldiers, 60 foot soldiers, 800 Native Americans and slaves, and over 1,000 animals (including horses, mules, cattle, pigs, and sheep).
Scope of Coronado's journey
Traveled over 1,250 miles through modern-day Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
The Turk
A Pawnee Native American met by Coronado who told of a treasure-filled city called Quivira; he was put to death by Coronado after no treasure was found.
Quivira
A city told of by the Turk that was supposed to be filled with treasure; in 1541, Coronado traveled east to find it, but found only a simple Native American village.
