Three different states of matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Particle Theory
all matter is made of tiny particles, and they are constantly moving
Solid
Has a fixed shape and fixed volume
They are constantly vibrating
Particles are highly attracted to each other, allowing it to keep its shape and not spread
Cannot be compressed easily, because not enough space between particles
Liquid
Has a fixed volume, but not a fixed shape
Particles are attracted to each other, but still have room to move past each other
Liquid takes shape of its container
Liquid cannot be compressed because there is not enough space between particles
Gas
Weakly attracted to each other
Particles have large spaces and constantly moving in all directions
Neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume
Gases spread out to fill the container
Can be compressed because there is space between the particles
Force of gas particles on the walls of their container is called gas pressure
