Chemical bond
An attractive force that holds atoms or ions together to form molecules, crystals, or compounds.
Valence electron
An electron in the outer shell of an atom that bonds with other atoms.
Electron energy distribution
Electrons closest to the nucleus have the least amount of energy, and electrons farthest from the nucleus have the greatest amount of energy.
Electron dot diagram
A diagram where valence electrons are shown as dots.
Group 18 elements
Elements that usually do not form bonds because they are stable enough to be on their own.
Helium energy level
An atom whose first energy level holds a full set of 2 electrons.
Covalent bond
The sharing of electrons between nonmetals only.
Single bond
A covalent bond in which 1 pair (2 total) of electrons is shared.
Double bond
A covalent bond in which 2 pairs (4 total) of electrons are shared.
Triple bond
A covalent bond in which 3 pairs (6 total) of electrons are shared.
Covalent substance properties
Substances that tend to have lower melting and boiling points and are nonconducting in the solid state.
Molecule
The smallest unit of a pure substance that keeps all the physical and chemical properties of that substance.
Chemical formula
A expression that indicates the types and numbers of atoms in a chemical compound.
Glucose (C6H12O6)
A compound formula consisting of 6 carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms, and 6 oxygen atoms, totaling 24 atoms.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
A molecule composed of one sulfur atom and two oxygen atoms.
