Adult Skeleton
The skeletal structure composed of living and dead tissues, consisting of 206 bones in total.
Ossification
The process by which bone tissue is formed, renewed, and repaired.
Joint
A place in the body where 2 or more bones meet and movement of the skeleton occurs when working alongside muscles.
Ball-and-Socket Joint
A type of joint that allows movement in multiple directions, with examples including the shoulder and hips.
Pivot Joint
A type of joint that allows rotation, with examples including the neck and forearm.
Hinge Joint
A type of joint that permits motion in one plane, with examples including the knee, toes, and fingers.
Ligament
A strong, slightly elastic tissue that connects a bone to another bone, keeping bones in place and providing stability to the skeleton.
Tendon
A cord that connects a muscle to a bone so that movement is possible.
Cartilage
A tissue that acts as a cushion between bones to reduce friction.
Sprain
A minor injury to a ligament that can ONLY occur at a joint.
Dislocation
A condition where a bone has been forced out of its normal position in a joint due to trauma.
R.I.C.E. Procedure
A rehabilitation and treatment protocol for minor injuries standing for Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate.
Fracture
Any crack or break in a bone.
Scoliosis
A disorder characterized by a side curvature of the spine.
Osteoporosis
A progressive loss of bone tissue over time causing bones to become weak and fragile.
Cranium
The anatomical name for the skull.
Scapula
The anatomical term for the shoulder blade, also commonly referred to as the "Angel Wing".
Vertebrae
The 24 individual bones stacked on top of each other that make up the spine.
Ulna
The bone located in the lower arm or forearm on the pinky side.
Radius
The bone located in the lower arm or forearm on the thumb side.
Patella
The anatomical name for the knee cap.
Clavicle
The anatomical term for the collar bone.
Sternum
The breast bone, which acts as the anchor point for all of the ribs.
Pelvis
The anatomical term for the hips.
Carpals
The anatomical term for the bones of the wrist.
Fibula
The bone in the lower leg located on the pinky toe side.
Tibia
The bone in the lower leg located on the big toe side, commonly known as the shin.
Phalanges
The anatomical term for the fingers and toes.
