  • Your clothes should be clean, pressed, and fit properly. Avoid clothing that is wrinkled, frayed, too short, too tight, too baggy, or too revealing. Avoid clothes with wild colors and prints. Don’t wear shirts or tops with messages printed on them unless approved by your employer.

  • Avoid visible skin on your torso below the neckline of your shirt or top. This means no visible tummies, breasts, or back skin. No short shirts, no short skirts, no low-rise pants, and no undergarments that are visible through your clothing.

  • Your shoes should be clean, polished, and closed-toe. You must wear socks (not no-show footies) or stockings. No bare feet, slippers, flip-flops, sandals, or open-toe shoes.

  • Keep makeup, jewelry, and other accessories to a minimum and in good taste. In some health care professions such as dental assisting, no jewelry is allowed. Avoid brightly polished fingernails and acrylic artificial nails.

  • Long hair should be pulled back and secured to avoid sanitary or safety problems. Facial hair should be groomed and neatly styled. Never wear perfume, aftershave, or scented lotions. Aromas may not be welcome among patients and coworkers and might aggravate breathing difficulties.

  • Poor posture can undermine a professional image. Sit up straight, stand erect, and don’t slouch. Wear your employee identification badge as prescribed in your company’s dress code. ¢ Avoid nontraditional hairstyles and colors and facial piercings; cover up tattoos.
